Lili

Now and then I ask myself whether I am a “digital” photographer who just sometimes likes the world in front of his eyes to be interpreted by photographic film, or whether I am a “film” shooter who occasionally prefers the simplicity and convenience of his digital camera.
When Lili and I arrived at our first shooting spot, I might have got an answer – at least for that day. As usual I wanted to check out the light with some digital test shots, but when I took my camera I realized that I had not a single SD card with me. Five different cameras and about a dozen film rolls, but not a single data storage medium. Interestingly, I wasn’t so much annoyed that I couldn’t take digitals, but more that I carried a heavy and completely useless camera with me during this hot summer day.

Anyway, we had a great afternoon. Lili is not only a pleasant and beautiful model, but also a nice and intelligent young woman who gave me some very interesting insights into her work on and behind the stage at the theater.

Equipment used: Nikon F4, 1.8/105, 1.2/50 | Leica M7, 0.95/50 | Contax 645, 2.0/80 | Pentax 67, 2.8/165 | Kodak Portra 160, 400 | Fuji Acros 100 | Kodak TriX

  1. What a wonderful image series! I really admire your work.

There is just one thing I don’t understand: Why do you bother taking your images on film while digital photography is so much easier?

      Thanks Sergey 🙂
Regarding your question: I love the characteristic of film, the tonality, the grain, the colors… Sure you can take a digital picture and mimic film with some filters during post processing, but this is not the same. It’s like being a big fan of zebras, but due it’s poor availability, taking a donkey and painting a few white and black stripes on it. In the end it might look the same, but somehow it not 🙂

  2. Hallo Florian

PS: Ja, auch das Modell ist sehr schön.

  3. hey florian!

    wonderful photos!

could I ask exactly what cameras and films you used for this set? Also what camera and lens did you use for photo 18? that bokeh is amazing!

Thanks Paul, glad you like it.
I totally forgot to mention my equipment. It’s now added to the text.
      If you mean picture [l.i.ll.]º18. It’s taken with a Leica M7, 0.95/50.

  4. Great photos! Do you use the epson v750 to scan, and if the answer is yes how do you get your colours to look so great?

    1. Florian Weiler

Thanks Sam, yes I do use the v750 together with Silverfast where I correct colors with NegaFix. Sometimes it is a little bit tedious, but most of the time I get results I like 🙂

  5. Wonderful photos, I don’t usually pay a lot of attention to portraits but your framing and use of light is entirely captivating! Love that you’re using film still too! Just one question… are you using flash on some photos?

    1. Thanks Ross, I use my flash not very often and until now I never used it with film. So this pictures were all taken with available light.
